Using Dual SIM on the latest Apple iPhones is simple with an eSIM, allowing you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having a physical nano-SIM.

There are several benefits of using a Dual SIM:

  • You may have two phones, one for business and one for personal, you can now have them both on one phone

  • Add a local data plan if you travel outside of the country or region

  • Have separate voice and data plans

What you need:

  • An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or and iPhone XR with iOS 12.1 or later

  • A QR code or a carrier app from a wireless carrier that supports eSIM

  • To use two different carriers, your phone must be unlocked

To activate your second cellular plan:

  • Either scan the QR code given to you by your carrier, or

  • Use your carrier’s iPhone app

Scan a QR code:
  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.

  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan.

  3. Use your iPhone to scan the QR code that your carrier provided.

If you're asked to enter a confirmation code to activate the eSIM, enter the number that your carrier provided.

Use a carrier app
  1. Go to the App Store and download your carrier's app.

  2. Use the app to purchase a cellular plan

Label your plans

After your second plan is activated you will need to label your plans. E.g:

- Personal

- Business

Once labelled you will be able to define which phone number to use when making and receiving calls and sending and receiving messages.

Choose how your plans work

First you need to identify your default number for which iMessage and FaceTime will use if you call or send a message to someone not in your ‘Contacts’. Or choose which number can only be used for cellular data.

Use Primary as your default line:

If you select this option, Primary will be used by default for voice, SMS, Data, iMessage, and FaceTime. Secondary will be available just for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary as your default line:

If you select this option, Secondary will be used for voice, SMS, Data, iMessage, and FaceTime. Primary will be available just for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary for cellular data only:

You might want to select this option if you're traveling internationally and you want to keep Primary for voice, SMS, iMessage, and FaceTime. This will allow you to use Secondary for data.
