Introducing the new macOS Mojave

Introducing macOS Mojave, the fifteenth major release of macOS and the successor to macOS High Sierra, released to the public yesterday.

macOS Mojave brings great new features inspired by the most powerful users, but designed for everyone. Users can stay better focussed on work with dark mode, organise files automatically with Stacks, and take more kinds of screenshots and with four new built-in apps.

The Four new apps are those that are popular on iOS and are now ready to shine with Mac versions. You can read curated news, follow stocks, record a lecture or adjust the heating, all without leaving your desktop.

Privacy and security

Now macOS Mojave requests permission when an app wants to access your Mac camera, microphone, or sensitive data. Prevent comment widgets and Like and Share buttons from tracking you without your permission with enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention in Safari. And don’t worry about getting “fingerprinted” as Safari gives websites a simplified system profile of your Mac.

Dark Mode

Dark Mode puts the focus on your work while toolbars, menus, and controls recede into the background. It’s integrated throughout macOS so it works with built-in apps and third-party apps can adopt it, too. The desktop picture even changes to match the time of day wherever you are. Switch it on in the General pane in System Preferences to create a distraction-free working environment that is easy on the eyes.

Stacks

With Stacks, your Mac automatically arranges all the files scattered on your desktop into groups based on file type, date, or tag so you can get organised and locate what you need easily. To scrub through a stack, use two fingers on a trackpad or one finger on a multi-touch mouse. To access a file, click to expand the stack, then open the file you need.

Finder

Browse files at a glance with the large previews in Gallery View, view full file metadata, and perform Quick Actions like rotate or mark-up.

Quick Look

Mark-up and sign PDFs, rotate and crop images, and even trim audio and video files right in Quick Look without having to launch an app.

Screenshots

Taking, annotating, sending, and saving screenshots is easier than ever. Just press Shift-Command-5 to bring up new onscreen controls, including video-recording tools.

Continuity Camera

Take a photo of an object or scan a document near your Mac using your iPhone, and the image automatically appears on your desktop. Continuity Camera works in the Finder, Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, Keynote and Numbers. It’s another way iPhone and Mac just click.

FaceTime

With Group FaceTime, you can now chat with up to 32 people simultaneously. New participants can be added at any time, and a call can include both audio and video callers. Users can join from any Apple device, iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch – coming later this Autumn.

Mac App Store

Find the perfect app on the newly redesigned Mac App Store by using the new Discover, Work, Play, and Develop tabs. You can also learn more through stories, video previews, and curated collections.

Home

Use the Home app to easily and securely control all your HomeKit accessories on your Mac, whether you’re at home, in the office, or traveling the globe. You can even control your home accessories using Siri.

Voice Memos

Now you can use the popular iPhone recording app on your Mac, too. You can record audio on your iPhone, and with iCloud support it automatically syncs so you can listen to it on your Mac.

Other enhancements:

  • Identify all your open sites in Safari, with just a glance by enabling website icons in Safari preferences

  • Compose more expressive emails, with a click of the new Emoji button

  • Siri now controls HomeKit enabled devices, and can help you find saved passwords and now knows more about food, celebrities and motor sport

  • macOS Mojave adds UK English language option
